Great Question! The Polar Huskies LOVE to fly because they know that once they get off the plane they will either be sledding in some new and exciting place, or returning home to Expedition Basecamp for the summer.

Beacon Blogged about the flight this week and you can read what Timber had to say about flying last year during GoNorth! Chukotka 2007 in week 7 and week 8 of Timber Tales!

How do the dogs tolerate the long flight?

We don't exactly get to wash our clothes that often. In order for us to wash anything out on the trail, we have to melt enough snow to add the soap and then enough water to rinse things thoroughly. It's simply too much work and consumes too much fuel. So we wear the same things everyday. Depending on how warm or cold it is, we may have as many as six or seven layers just on our upper-bodies. We layer numerous pairs of pants and shirt and each one of us has to fit all of our clothing into one duffel bag!

How do you do laundry?

gorp stands for "Good Old Raisins and Peanuts"

You may know it is "trial mix" with the addition of M&Ms and more fancy nuts and fruits. Gorp and trail mix are know as "high calorie" food so it is good for us to eat out on the trail.

There is a picture of the gorp we made on the week 03 Photo Journal.

What is gorp?

That is a dangerous situation and one in which we never hope to find ourselves in.

We do our research before we set out on the ice, using maps, assessing currents, talking to Elders and hunters who know and understand the land and sea, and, of course, our common sense.

Does the ice break when you are sleeping on it? If it does, what do you do?

You can adopt a Polar Husky at any time.

By making a $60 donation to the University of Minnesota, your name (or that of your class) is added to a list of proud sponsors and you will receive an official Polar Husky adoption certificate for your Polar Husky in the mail.

Your adoption helps to support this free GoNorth! education program and the Polar Huskies on the journey ahead!

Yes they do! ;-)

Much like people, the weather does greatly effect the moods of our Polar Huskies.

For starters, they typically don't like rain. They also don't like it when it gets terribly hot. They tend to get tired and cranky when it is hot and humid.

They do love the cold weather. They know that snowfall means they will get to pull the sled much in the same way they know that a week-long drive in the dogtruck means we are going on a trip!

When we are out on the trail, they enjoy the cold temperatures of the Arctic. If there are storms the result in us needing to stay where we are for a day or two and not travel, they will just curl up in a ball and patiently wait it out.

Do the dogs like the cold? I'm sure you will say yes, but do they really like it? Does it make them happy?

That is very good observation about us having 3 female Team members this year!

To be honest, when traveling across the Arctic it doesn't matter and isn't any easier if you are male vs. female. What matters is your attitude, your skill level and your ability to work as part of a team - even under extreme physical and mental stress.

There are so many girl team members this year! Are girls better at being in the Arctic than boys? (we hope the answer is yes)

Yes, the dogs that have to stay home do indeed get depressed sometimes when they see the packing of the truck, and then when it eventually takes off too.

We have checked in on the Polar Huskies back at the Kennel right now. They got a lot of snow right after we left and we are happy to report that Peto, Timber, Ginger, Domino and Xena are all hanging out and having a good time with one another and the puppies!

Do the dogs that had to stay in Michigan get depressed?

Yes! And we are thrilled about this... the Northern Lights are spectacularly beautiful. You can learn more about the Northern Lights in the A to Z section.

You can also SEE the Northern Lights by watching the Abisko Webcam online!

Will you be able to see the Northern Lights where you are traveling?
