There are two parts to this. First, Polar Huskies might stand their ground with a polar bear, but they would never, ever fight with people. As for liking what Paul and Mille are doing? That is different. The Polar Huskies see Paul and Mille as the alpha-dogs of the Polar Husky pack and like to work as a team. Dogs, like people, can have a bad day though and be a little fussy. Sometimes the Polar Huskies will act like they do not hear commands, like running faster when asked to slow down, just to show they are a little cranky that day. It would be like you not listening to your parents or your teacher when they ask you to do something. You still respect them, you just might be tired or having a bad day at the moment.

Have the dogs fought with you once because they didn't like what you were doing?

Everyone loves Good Thunder! When he was a puppy he spent a few months at a home in St Paul, MN where there was another dog and three boys. He learned at an early age that people are very good at giving love and petting. So he LOVES IT when he sees people and can get a nice scratch behind his ear!

When Goodie was unloaded from the dog truck and into his crate at the airport in Chicago, did people like him?

Do you know who King Kong is?

King Kong was an ape that appeared in a bunch of movies... starting back in 1933! But he wasn't like an ordinary ape in a zoo or from the jungle... he was HUGE! He was taller than a lot of buildings. (He wasn't real of course... this was in a movie)

We aren't the ones who call the Polar Huskies King Kong dogs. To us, they are simply the Polar Huskies.

When we arrived at the Lodge at Fjellborg Arctic Journeys, the Polar Huskies were SOOOO much bigger than the Fjellborg huskies that Kenth's initial reaction was to call them "King Kong Dogs."

Why do you call the dogs king kong dogs?

This is a good question! The airplane ride is part of the program. We all had get to Sweden to start the expedition and we choose to go by plane... we planned that as part of the expedition process and allowed time for the flight.

The fact that the plane was soooo COOL, well that was just a bonus!

How do you make time to go on this cool air plane trip and care for the dogs?

Fortunately there was no major delay this year! Mille did switch to a flight that was 90-minutes later than planned, and while stressful at the time, was not much of a delay.

If you want to read about BIG delays, check out the Trail Reports and Timber Tales from the GoNorth! Chukotka 2007 Program.

We were very concerned for some time that the delay with the dog paperwork could have become a bigger problem, but luckily Dr Frank at the USDA saved the day!

How did it feel to get delayed?

Usually we do not eat the butter "right from the stick." Sometimes after a long day on the trail we do crave it so much we will eat a bite right off the stick! Just like ice cream!

We do not have access to the traditional choice of fatty food—such as seal or whale blubber in the same fashion as they Native people. But we still need lots of calories and fat just like they do! So instead, we eat what is "native" to us and that is mostly butter and cheese.

It is also good to note that Polar Huskies can eat butter and cheese too, and sometimes we share.

Mille is from Denmark and is pretty much butter-crazed, she will eat the butter raw more than others. Everyone else prefers to eat the butter with something. We fry the bagels daily in lots of butter, mix it in with our hot noodles and mashed potatoes or, as Paul likes it—sandwiched between two pieces of jerky!

Do you eat the butter raw?

Answer provided by Henry Huntington, GoNorth! Cool Scientist and Week 04 Chat Expert:

There are a lot of animals, but not so many as there are in more temperate regions (such as Montana!) I've seen thousands of caribou, hundreds of whales, walrus, lots of moose, bears, bighorn sheep...

Question Submitted at the Week 4 Chat:

Is there a lot of wildlife up there in Alaska?
